Health Alliance Plan (HAP) and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) are hosting a free exercise program at the Ecorse Senior Center located at 4072 W. Jefferson Avenue in Ecorse, beginning Wednesday, March 21.
The Enhance Fitness class will meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Although the class is intended to help older adults improve their overall fitness and well-being, all adults are welcome. Those with physical disabilities or who travel by wheelchair are also encouraged to attend. Classes are open to the public, and advance registration is not required.
The one-hour classes focus on cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, flexibility and balance training by demonstrating fun and simple ways to exercise. A certified fitness instructor leads classes three times a week to provide social stimulation as well as physical benefits to participants.
“Older adults often become less active and lose their endurance, strength, balance and flexibility,” said Chrystal Roberts, Director of Community Relations at HAP. “That’s why it’s so important to take advantage of free programs like Enhance Fitness that can help them to manage their chronic diseases, prevent falls and improve their quality of life.”
“Many Enhance Fitness participants have reported an increase in strength, greater activity level, and improved mood during and after the class,” said Dr. Art Franke, Vice President of Programs at NKFM. “We are thrilled to partner with HAP to bring this popular, evidence-based program to the Ecorse community.”
