Healthy Hair Starts with a Healthy Body® targets African Americans who are disproportionately affected by chronic kidney disease and its precursors. The program provides a one-day training for stylists to educate them about kidney disease and the primary contributors, hypertension and diabetes. After completion of the 6 hour training, the stylists are considered lay health- educators, prepared to talk with their clients about health, lifestyle changes, and risk factors. The program is evidence-based and the program intervention includes risk assessments, health education literature, outlining of specific prevention steps, and the need to see a physician. The benefits of good nutrition and physical activity are emphasized throughout the program.
Dodge the Punch: Live Right® is a barbershop initiative to teach good nutrition and physical activity habits and reduce the high rate of chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension among African American males. Data on disease prevalence and prevention behavior habits among African American men suggests the importance of targeting this demographic group. This program provides the same training format as Healthy Hair start with a Healthy Body with a greater emphasis on men visiting their doctors and knowing their “score card”. The benefits of good nutrition and physical activity are emphasized throughout the program.
The salon/barber programs have received numerous awards and significant national and international attention.
