Reduce your fall risk!

Falling is NOT a normal part of aging. There are steps you can take to reduce your risk. Visit the Falls Prevention Awareness Website to learn more.

What does falls prevention have to do with kidney disease?

  • Frailty is common among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with increased mortality and hospitalizations.
  • Compared to the general population, individuals on dialysis have a greater risk of falling and fall-related complications. They are also three to four times more likely to suffer hip fractures.
  • Evidence suggests that people with CKD age faster and have an increased risk of poor physical function.
  • Compared to the general population, significant predictors for falls risk and injury includes individuals with diabetes, arthritis and/or limited physical function.
  • Compared to the general population, people with CKD often also have diabetes, arthritis and/or limited physical function, which are significant predictors for falls risk and injury.

A Matter of Balance

A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls.

Walk With Ease

The Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease Program is an exercise program that can reduce pain and improve overall health. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you can have success with Walk With Ease. Participants walk on their own schedule at their own pace with a goal of building to 30 minutes for at least three days a week by the end of the program. The program has helped participants improve balance, build confidence in walking pace, and improves limitation.

PATH
