Facts about Falls Prevention and Kidney Disease

  • Frailty is common among individuals with chronic kidney disease and is associated with increased mortality and hospitalizations.
  • Compared to the general population, individuals on dialysis have a greater risk of falling and fall-related complications. They also have a three to four times greater risk for hip fractures
  • Evidence suggests that CKD accelerates aging and increases risk of poor physical function, and frailty.
  • Compared to the general population,  significant predictors for falls risk and injury includes individuals with diabetes, arthritis and/or limited physical function.
