The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) is supporting the MI Big Green Gym initiative—a partnership between the Michigan Recreation and Park Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. In combination with healthy eating, regular physical activity can help prevent a range of chronic disease including heart disease, cancer, and stroke, which are the three leading causes of death. Additionally, physical activity helps to control weight; build lean muscle; reduce fat; promote strong bone, muscle, and joint development; and decrease the risk of obesity. As the incidence of obesity in children increases, so does the incidence of type 2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of kidney failure. Because most cases of kidney failure can be prevented or delayed, we must also focus on the root causes of kidney disease—obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure—to help people avoid this disease altogether.
MI Big Green Gym is designed to promote overall well-being and a healthy lifestyle through use of parks and recreation facilities. MI Big Green Gym is comprised of participating state and local parks; Michigan really is a big green gym—with endless opportunities to get active.
